The definition of Passion as defined by the Webster’s Dictionary is “a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or doing something.” This week we recognize a player and wall ball (handball) advocate who we believe epitomizes the very definition. “Solo” as his friends and fellow ballers call him, has put South Florida on the national map as a premier wall ball destination in the United States.
Solo grew up in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn and migrated to south Florida craving a piece of home. It was then that he came across wall ball courts in Hollywood, FL and began to redevelop the love of the game as he once did as a child back in NYC. Wanting to bring people together who had roots in New York and a passion for the sport, Solo began to organize and promote days during the week for Floridians to gather and compete at different south Florida court locations. Over time, these casual “pick-up” days transitioned to local and regional tournaments bringing players from Miami, Broward, Orlando and Tampa to the courts in Hollywood.
Solo has now been hosting tournaments consistently in South Florida for the last 3 years at the Historic Garfield Paddleball courts in Hollywood FL, which some of the visitors have affectionately renamed “Handball Heaven.”
This location has attracted a range of athletes of all calibers from New York, Philadelphia and most recently Texas to come down and compete in what was dubbed #sflgotnxt (South Florida’s Got Next) tournaments.
The dedication and consistency Solo has displayed to make each tournament a success is one that Florida players can be proud of his commitment to excellence in the execution of his events and his genuine passion for the game is why we believe Solo has earned his recognition and praise as our new Player of the Week!
