“True happiness arises, in the first place, from the enjoyment of one’s self.”

–  Joseph Addison

Happy and energetic are just a couple of words that describe David “The Favorite” Velez. If you speak to him or watch him play wallball (handball) he will make you smile.

David developed a love for many sports at an early age but found himself on the Wallball court most of the time. Growing up in Bushwick Brooklyn, David watched his father play wallball. Admiring his father and other local players he aspired to be just as good at the one-wall game that is played in parks across New York City.  “I started playing at 8 years old but nobody wanted to play with me so I hit the ball by myself and learned on my own” said David.

“My Mother has always been very supportive no matter what I’ve done so I will always be there for her.”

David grew up learning how to speak sign language because his mother is deaf. Now he works at a youth organization teaching children sign language. It brings him joy to be able to teach others a skill that has been so important to him.

David is 24 years old and has been competing in tournaments now for 3 years. His charismatic personality shows when he’s on the court. He is known for making acrobatic plays and pulling off seemingly impossible shots. David made a name for himself at the 2018 King of the Courts. He carried momentum through the end of the Summer taking 1st Place in the Wallball Big Park “B” Doubles Tournament and at a Far Rockaway Open Singles Tournament. David plays with no fear and gives his all in every game and that is something that can not be taught. We are looking forward to more highlights from David in the near future.

Congratulations to our Player of the Week David “The Favorite” Velez
