Name: Chris Curran

Role: Chief Executive, GAA Handball Ireland

Chris Curran is from County Tyrone in Ireland. He has been involved in Handball for over 30 years initially through his Club in Loughmacrory, County Tyrone, and played the sport actively during that period, with a strong family influence and background in my local community, where handball was first played over 140 years ago. He
took up the role as National Manager of GAA Handball in February 2009 and have since taken up the role of C.E.O. of GAA Handball where they now have a full time team at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

The current GAA Handball Ireland President is Walter O’Connor, from Meath, Ireland, who has been a top ranked player with All Ireland Senior and World Championship titles to his credit over a distinguished playing career.

Handball in Ireland is part of the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) which has over 800,000 members and has clubs throughout the world. GAA Handball Ireland recently launched our new strategy (CLICK HERE for Strategy Digital Document) which includes plans to see One Wall Handball initially introduced in the 470+ GAA Clubs around the world and this overall strategy will include the formation of a new unified International Federation for Handball which can put forward a technically structured formal application to secure Olympic Status for our sport.

The recent launch (2010) of a One Wall Schools Initiative in Ireland has since seen the construction of 118 newly launched One Wall Facilities (most with more than 3 One Wall Courts) in Schools. This expansion continues to grow rapidly.

This will be featured strongly as GAA Handball Ireland bid to ensure the biggest World Handball Championships staged to date take place in Dublin, Ireland in October 2012. A target of 30+ countries with 2,000+ competitors will be delighted to attend an event to be staged in One Major arena, with over 3,000 spectators, Live TV Coverage and TV Highlights Shows every evening throughout the event. A host of other Major Socila events will also be staged by GAA Handball Ireland throughout this very special occasion and a huge ‘Céad míle fáilte’ is extended to every handball player the world over to come to Ireland!

Full details of grades, events and a host of other major announcements in the build-up to the event will begin from the Official Launch Date of Saturday 19th November 2011. Check out from that date which will see the launch of the New Official World Handball 2012 Championship site.
