“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”

— Maya Angelou

The week Wall Ball is extremely proud to honor the youngest wall ball athlete ever in the 3 year history of our weekly publication! She is a very “competitive, intelligent, and passionate young lady who is dedicated and determined to always be at her best both on and off the court.” She holds a number of Championship titles including the Junior Exhibition for Team Guz during the “SuperBowl of Handball” Guz vs Zerega, in which she and her partner are undefeated! Congratulations to our new Player of the Week – Kaitlyn Colon!

In her own words: From a Proud Mom, Kathie F. –

Kaitlyn is a very competitive, intelligent, and passionate young lady.  She is dedicated and determined to always be at her best both on and off the court.  She excels in all aspects of her life because she puts in the work and dedication.  Her goals and aspirations are commendable and she impresses me every day.  I am very blessed that at only 13, Kaity demonstrates such awe-inspiring spirit and conviction.

Kaity is the youngest of two.  She and her older brother, MarkAnthony are like two peas in a pod.   They have the same sarcastic, funny wit and competitive edge.  She relies on him for not only comfort but for advice in any and every sport she is involved with.

Kaity has always had a passion for sports; some would say it is part of her DNA make up.  Though her first crush was baseball at the age of 4, then skateboarding and basketball, handball would be her calling.  I should have known by the ball marks on my kitchen wall when she was 1, that handball would be her love.  She is a third generation ball player and is very adamant about the sport and her contribution to it.  From her very first tournament at the age of 11, Kaity continues to put her all in her performance.  She is constantly training and studying her components to formulate a strategy.  Her dream is to have handball elevate to the Olympic status and be among the first to represent this great sport in that arena as a top “A” player.

Though her passion is handball, Kaity also excels in education.  Her hard work has afforded her the ability to be accepted to her first two choices for High School; St. John’s Prep and Christ the King.  Education is a key factor in my household and held in high regards.  Kaity is fully aware that if her grades suffer, her playing time would definitely be impacted. Though I respect her handball talent and am very proud of her accomplishments thus far, they do not outweigh the importance of an education.  As such, Kaity continues to obtain exceptional grades and is motivated by the potential of a great future.

As a mother, my ultimate goal in life is to ensure my children are safe, happy, and feel loved; to nourish them in mind, body, and soul.  Kaity, is very respectful, kind hearted, and compassionate.  She displays great sportsmanlike behavior and is humbled by the compliments she receives and by her accomplishments.  As many of you have witnessed, she is not afraid to call out an “A” player to a game of singles.  It’s this confidence and determination that will not only elevate her game, but continue to form a foundation of empowerment.  She is an exceptional daughter that I am very blessed to have and privileged to bear witness to the strong and beautiful young lady she is becoming. They are many things in life that I may have done wrong, but my kids are by far my biggest and greatest accomplishment.

My future dream is to one day, become a police officer (if the Olympic dream doesn’t work out).  I am determined to help the community out and server others.  It is very important to me that I help those who can’t help themselves; to be the voice of those people who feel voiceless.  My mom always says that we are all responsible for each other in this world and we should treat others like we want to be treated; we have a commitment to help those less fortunate.  What better way to serve my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, then to serve my community!

I also wanted to thank those who have helped me in my handball journey.  Those people who have taken the time to work with me on my game and encourage me.  But most of all I want to say thank you to my mom, my brother, and my handball mom, China.  They continue to help me grow into a better player and support me in all I do.  They are definitely my number one fans!  Lastly, I am very honored to have been chosen to be player of the week, to be featured among the greats in this sport is something I will always cherish!
