The “B” Division Bronx Bomber

“Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”

– Mattie Stepanek

This week  Wall Ball is proud to recognize an athlete who was victorious at both the Zerega A/B Event on Saturday, March 2nd and at the Elks B Doubles Tournament on Sunday, March 3rd. He is fast becoming the fierce competition in the amateur division and is heavy on the radar to receive his “A” card in 2014.

Congratulations to our new Player of the Week – Luis “Bori” Garcia!

In his own humble words:

I was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. I began playing sports at a very young age. Boxing was my main sport, but I played football and basketball on the side. When I moved to New York I used to play basketball at St. James Park and I used to always hear a player named Lefty Danny in the handball courts making everyone laugh. One day I watched this game called handball and he noticed how interested I was. From there he told me to go to his tournament to watch how the game was played on a more competitive level. I immediately knew Handball was a sport I wanted to start playing. From there on I played every day from early morning to night. I started to play in tournaments to get the experience. Now I just hope to keep progressing and hopefully become an A player.

Playing with Timbo is an honor knowing that he is the #1 top player in the world! I thought it would be difficult at first because we both like to take control of the court but it actually worked out. In the beginning I struggled. However once Timbo gave me a  few points playing with him became easier. I enjoy playing with Timbo and am proud to say he was my partner in my first victorious A/B. I look forward to playing with him again, the chemistry is great, and knowing that we are both from St. James Park is a great feeling.

I began to play with Dito last year and there are no words to describe the chemistry we have. I guess the best way to describe it is the same way Carlin and Pooch have chemistry. It just happens and it’s like magic! He is also an upcoming player and has been playing the game for a very long time. I also look forward to playing with him in several more B tournaments, and I also hope that he does become a top player in the future.

Thank you to the handball community for your support! This year I will represent the Bronx at GUZ vs ZEREGA!
